“Your Twitter Account is Currently Suspended”

By lynn jones on March 10th, 2012

I got this bug to open a second Twitter account.

My account, “lynnjonesie” was progressing nicely, so I just figured it would be fun to build another one for more exposure. I know many Tweeters do it and even have multiple accounts.
At the time I thought it was a great idea, but now………..I am not so sure.

I carefully chose my name “sweet-sums”, a gravatar and a background that I thought looked very nice. I was pleased and excited to begin! So I loaded my Tweet Adder account with tweets and on January 17, I set everything in motion.

The next morning I log in to admire it  :) and do some tweeting.  But, there was that bar across the top with the words: “Your Twitter account has been suspended.”

What? My heart sunk. What did I do wrong? I felt sick. I’ve been rejected!
I sent in a ticket to ask why my account was suspended.  Of course, I got the standard Support ticket email back to review all the rules of Twitter.  If I felt I was not in violation of any rules, then I could respond back to them.

The only thing I could figure is that I followed too fast.  So I responded very sweetly and politely and assured them I would do everything I could to behave.  :) I mean, how could they pick on my sweet, cute little Twitter account?  I barely had any followers yet and only a handful of tweets.

After bothering them a couple times because I had not heard from them, I received this email  on Jan 27:

“Your account was suspended because it appears you may be managing a number of Twitter accounts. Creating serial or bulk accounts with overlapping uses is a violation of the Twitter Rules; as a result, all of the accounts created have been suspended pending more information being provided.
Please respond with the following information:
a) a list of the accounts that you have created and which of these you would like to have reinstated, and
b) your planned use for the accounts.
The Twitter Rules can be found here: http://support.twitter.com/articles/18311”

I responded with the necessary information, assuring them I was not guilty as charged, so would they give me my little Twitter account back, pretty please.

On Jan 30 they un-suspended my account.
On Jan 31 they suspended my account.

Oh my gosh!  What is going on….I wondered and even asked them that.  I am absolutely harmless and am not hurting anyone! In fact, I love posting encouraging, inspirational quotes along with business links interspersed in there every so often. I am a nice upstanding Twitterer!

My goodness, I see mass followers, mass tweeters, foul language, pornography, bad attitudes and the like on Twitter and they want to suspend me? I was dumb-founded to say the least! I had not even turned my Tweet Adder account on for fear of being suspended, so I knew that was not the problem here.

Of course I immediately sent in a support ticket. Having not heard from them for several days, I sent in another ticket on Feb 26 and I heard back from them with what I think was a form letter but I singled out this paragraph:

“While we strive to avoid mistakes, it’s also possible that your account was suspended in error. If after reviewing the Rules, you have no idea why your account was suspended, just reply to this email indicating as much, and we’ll take another look at your case. Our apologies if the error turns out to be ours.”
I agreed with them and assured them that it was INDEED a mistake on their part.

On Feb 29 my “sweet_sums” account was un-suspended.  I was very grateful!!!!
However, it was short lived.
On March 1, my account was suspended again.  This is #3.
By this time I have lost my sweetness. I want to know why they are playing with me!
I received this message from them after sending in my support ticket:

“Twitter has automated systems that find and remove multiple automated spam accounts in bulk. Unfortunately, it looks like your account got caught up in one of these spam groups by mistake.
I’ve restored your account; sorry for the inconvenience.”

Whoo hoo! I have my account back on March 1.

On March 4, I receive a a message that Twitter received a request to reset my password.  I am not sure what that is all about, but for the 3rd time I change my password.

I enjoy my new account, get a few followers, follow others, post a few tweets, retweet nice tweets every day but am being careful to not set Tweet Adder running. I do not want to take any chances of getting my account shut down again.  I will give it some time and then maybe set Tweet adder to work with “sweet_sums”, but not just yet.

The pleasure was short lived.

On March 7, my account is suspended again….for the 4th time.

This time when I sent in a support ticket, I speak in CAPITAL LETTERS because I feel like shouting! I am gratefully surprised I had it for more than 1 day, and I thank them for that.  lol
There is no more sweetness or love here anymore.
I think I’m done. If they un-suspend my account, that will be okay.
If not……….I am perfectly fine with that decision.
I don’t understand all the ins and outs of their reasoning and decisions, but I am weary trying to figure it out. Life is too short to have this mental strain in my life.
What I thought was a great idea……….well, I am beginning to think it was a bird-brained thinking after all.
I write this wondering if anyone else has had this problem or if the Twitter police are just cracking down lately. Any comments or experiences are welcome.

Happy tweeting everyone!

Wow Lynn, I could feel the muscles in my shoulders tensing just reading your article! Really sorry for what you’ve been going through, but I have to say it’s the first time I’ve heard of anyone going through this with Twitter. Honestly not sure I’d have been nearly as patient as you have been!

Marty, I guess I press the issue because it is unfair treatment. It seems so wrong to suspend an innocent Tweeter and let ones who really are violating the rules go free. But like I said, I’m to that point of feeling fine with letting it go.

I have never heard of that either, but I can see why you would be upset. One thing that helps is to vary when your tweets go out, and to do as much as possible through something other than tweetadder. I think they are cracking down on automated systems.

Thanks Linda, I was made aware of that long time ago and do change up the settings. In this situation is was not a factor, as I had not set this account to work with Tweet Adder after the first suspension. A massive amount of Tweeters use automated systems…..not sure how they can get rid of all those Twitter users….if you know what I mean.
      Have a wonderful day.

Wow Lynn! It is a shame that with all of the foolishness that gets disbursed on that site that they would suspend an account from someone who does not participate in such antics.

Oh well, thanks for sharing your experience and good luck moving forward!

    Lynn-

WOW! I can’t believe they did that to you…..that’s so frustrating! Since I’m an attorney AND an internet marketer, I’m pretty used to having to read those boring terms and conditions. Sounds like once you got on their naughty list you couldn’t get off, even though it was an honest mistake.

If it makes any difference, I STILL can’t seem to get “into” the whole Twitter thing and I’m doing fine with my online marketing- so no love lost! ; ) Forget those Twitter goofs!

Sorry to hear of your troubles. I can see the logic behind what they say but it is annoying when you see all the fake accounts, ‘adult’ accounts and spam everywhere and you know you’re not doing anything like that.

I’ve got 3 main twitter accounts in different niches and have never had any trouble with them. Recently I set up a few ‘spares’ just in case anything ever happened to one of the main ones. I’m not very active at all on the spares – a few tweets and adding v e r y slowly but I got one of them shut down just like you are reporting.

I’ve more or less left the other spares alone since then as I don’t want the suspensions to spread but I’m using the other 3 as normal and have no trouble.

It is a mystery why the picked on you. Sometimes there is no logic to things and talking to big organisations to try to get some common sense is next to impossible. I’m having the same trouble with googlw, but that’s another story….

Im so mad. My account is still banned. I think i followed “too fast” -_-
We should be able to follow however many people we want. All these rules are not doing anything but pissing people off. I am a producer and i follow artist. They followed me back. So why am i getting suspended again? Twitter lost mad cool points with me.

Thank you friends, I appreciate everyone’s responses whether you are offering helpful tips, giving me sympathy or letting me know you are experiencing the same frustrating struggles. When there is no rhyme or reason to suspensions, we have to wonder what the Twitter Police are up to.
    See you on Twitter,

yep happened to me too!! After following 7 people suspended.. I set up another account because my main (and only one I’ve ever used) got banned/filtered ..I do contests and a lot of them require the #hashtag to win well if they can’t see my hashtags I cannot win.. so I set up another account.. filed tickets , tweeted to support ..nothing is being done…NOTHING!! I also tried setting up another after that…suspended ..it’s a vicious circle. I don’t understand it, so many others out there with multiple accounts and having no problems at all!!

my account was suspended twice in 5 days. And still is. I dont believe that I will be allowed to use it anymore. All my tweets were correct! No abuse, no violating rules. similar to you – I ve created it as my second account. For the purpose of entering competitions. Problem is that some giveaways “ask” you to follow tens of bloggers – and your account then becomes suspicious. I am very sceptical in my situation since I cant argue in english (I live in european country). These are really silly and discriminating twitter rules.

Hi, I’ve been using Twitter since 2008 and just 3 days ago my account suddenly got suspended and I am really upset. I feel better now after reading this article, to know that I’m not actually alone. This suspension thingy in Twitter is really frustrating. I hope I get my Twitter account back. Thanks. :)

Jelene, I hope you get your Twitter account back too. It could take a while, but send in that support ticket and respond when they reply, to keep it going. I need to write a “follow up” on this article, as I did eventually get my account back.
      Good luck to you!
