Seven Simple Secrets to Help You Eat That Frog!
I am not the only one!
Did you know that about 3% of adults have clear, written goals? I am among the 97% who don’t!
That tells me I am in the majority. Sometimes being in the majority is good, but I have a sinking feeling in this case it’s not.
Why?
I’ve just cracked open the book Eat That Frog by Brian Tracy and I get slammed with “Before you can determine your “frog” and get on with eating it, you have to decide exactly what you want to accomplish in each area of your life.”
Oh my, I get a brain cramp just thinking about thinking deep! lol
However, Brian says that Clarity is the most important concept in personal productivity. If we are very precise about what we want and what we have to do to achieve it, the easier it is for us to overcome procrastination, eat our frog, and get the task done.
The major reason for procrastination and lack of motivation is being vague, confused and fuzzy minded about what it is you are exactly supposed to be doing.
Think on paper. A Great Rule for Success
The 3% I mentioned accomplish five to ten times as much as those folks who you would think had it all together, but for what ever reason never took the time to write out exactly what it is they want.
Brian shares a powerful formula for setting and achieving goals that can be used for the rest of your life and in any area of your life.
It is so simple, I don’t know why I didn’t think of it. ![]()
1. Determine exactly what it is you want.
Sit down with your significant other, your mentor, your boss or whoever can help you determine your goals and objectives until they are crystal clear. Don’t be among those who are working away, day after day, on low priority tasks, you know things that don’t matter so much.
2. Pen it on Paper.
When you write your goals down, you crystallize them and create something you can touch and see. Unwritten goals have no energy and lead to confusion, vagueness and miss direction.
3. Set a deadline on your goal.
There has to be urgency. Without a deadline, you will naturally procrastinate and not get as much done.
4. Make a list of everything you are going to have to do to achieve your goal.
Build your list of all the things you need to do. A list gives you a visual picture of your defined goal.
5. Organize the list into a plan.
Determine what you need to do first and what can wait. It’s amazing how much easier it is to achieve your goal when you break it down into individual tasks, steps you can take one at a time. You will find you will be far more productive and efficient.
6. Take action on your plan immediately!
As Nike says, Just Do It! Do something, anything! Execute!
7. Promise to do something daily that moves you toward your major goal.
Push forward. Move. Don’t stop. Be disciplined. (my favorite word) This can make or break it for you. It can make you one of the most productive and successful people you know!
The cool thing about clearly defined written goals:
They have a powerful affect on your thinking.
They motivate you in to action.
They stimulate your creativity, release energy and help you with putting things off until tomorrow.
After all…..”If you have no goal, you have no place to go.” ~Jim Cross
And we have places to go!
But right now I have a list to make!
Then I will eat my frog.
Then I will go places.
See you there?

Lynn, great information that will be very helpful for everyone, no matter where they are in the plan.
I agree, being organized and writing down steps, which will lead you to accomplish all goals, towards the end result. That is a key activity to be accomplished. Not, leaving out accepting and understanding to gain leverage, from being apart of a team. You will not accomplish much being alone. No one, is successful as they determined, alone. It took a team of dedicated passionate people who have the same desires. To help countless people achieve their greatness. You would be no different no matter how determined you are. No one, will or can become successful in business, alone.
Lynn, your have given your readers and I, a blue print to starting with the right focus. Following this as the steps to start before starting your business. This will save countless time and energy. Not to include, revenue.
Your a wonderful supportive leader in our industry, Lynn. I am blessed to have met you, and following your growth in our business. I love the site you have here, and look forward in your next, amazing post.

Hi William, I agree! A Master Mind team is essential for success. I would not be where I am today if not for a great supportive team. And yes, these simple 7 steps can be applied to all areas of our life. Even house projects! I’m thinking along that line because my husband is on vacation and has a list of projects.
Thank you for your generous kind comments. I truly appreciate it and you!

Lynn,
I am one of the 97% like you. I have tried to write goals in the past but it never seemed to work for me. But then, I was just writing things down, no clear cut vision. This makes so much sense! Duh! Why didn’t I see it???? Thanks for this reality check. I am off to join you and make my list and (yuck) eat a frog!
Hi Gail, Thanks for being in my crowd of 97%! But lets jump over to the 3% and make some changes.
Stay tuned as I plan to share more about how to Eat That Frog. When you finish your list, I’d like you to share with me, if you’d like to.
I so appreciate your visit and comment.
Have a fabulous Friday!

Hi Lynn,
It took me a long time before I started writing down my goals.
When I first started in mlm it just would not sink in … “Your reason why” my sponsor would drill into me.
Hey I knew better … just give me the money and I will work out the rest later.
Well recently I started defining my goals and it has made a big difference to my attitude…Still need to define the path.
Great posr thanks
Cheers

Hi Bryan, Thank you, that gives me encouragement to know that defining your goals has really helped you. That motivates me and lets me know I am on the right track. It does take some contemplative thinking to get clarity on what it is we actually want.
I appreciate your visit and comment,

Hi Lynn,
Love to follow Brian Tracy. And he says that crossing things off of that list helps us with a feeling of accomplishment. Once you have accomplished some goals, you know you can accomplish anything that you set your mind to because you now know the process.
“Eating the Frog” on a daily basis means choosing which task may be a harder one to accomplish and putting it at the top of the list, and getting it done!
Thanks for all the goal setting reminders! Awesome!

Linda and Lynn,
Crossing off daily agenda items is So Satisfying! It works for me, my students, and others in my life who need that “external” push to get things done.
Your post and others’ comments remind me of one of my favorite sayings: “If you don’t know where you are going, then any road will take you there.”
Linda, You are absolutely correct! If we tackle the most unpleasant thing first, we feel such a sense of relief, that I believe we will be propelled to accomplish greater things on our list.

It is a proven fact that if you live your life without a very well defined set of goals you will almost certainly not going to get too far. So it is really important to set your goals. If we want our mind to react primarily to our goals and to the means of reaching them, we can re-educate it by putting pen to paper and re-reading these goals over and over again, until they become our main focus.
Btw, I love the photo here. SMART goal setting.

Hi Lynn,
Wow! It seems I will have to add this book to my ever-growing reading list. It sounds like it contains some great information.
I am a huge believer in goals, but like you I am not great about writing them down. Thanks for this formula that Brian uses in his book. It makes it easier to set goals and then take action! Some have no goals, but many others have goals and never take action towards them.
Either way there is not movement to reach your goals.
Thanks for this wakeup call, Lynn!

Thank you for the great comments!

I can speak from experience on both sides. In the early days of building my business I was much better about writing down my goals. Every month I would write goals for the month that would be stepping stones to get me to my bigger goals. It worked splendidly and I achieved several long term goals in my business.
Now that I have reached those goals, I am stepping into a new area creating info products. When I read your article, I realized I have not written my goals in regard to this new area. Thanks for the reminder. I will do that today.

Great article Lynn! I’ve been writing down my goals for years, and it definitely makes a BIG difference. I also keep visuals of my goals/dreams in front of me – I created a 8 1/2 x 11 poster with color images and it’s posted right next to my laptop so I can always see it. I guess that makes me part of the smaller percentage you describe, but I’m faaaar from a top achiever. My biggest problem is setting too many goals for myself so I spread myself too thin. I’m working on that now and trying to focus on just one or two goals at a time. Thanks for the inspiration!

For me organization is something unlike other things that isn’t so easy why i dont know why. As odd as it sounds stepping out of that comfort zone to get stuff done also helps.
Something I picked up from another blogger is use a timer, set it for a specific amount of time then move it seems like that extra nagging reminder that you need to get it done and with time who knows you wont need the timer any more.
CJ, thanks for the great ideas you shared! I’ll have to try that.

Hello Lynn
Only 3%, not surprising
Excellent advice, especially about writing it down.
I am not sure how anyone could start a business and not have a written plan. I would feel lost without one

Hi Willena, I love the list too. He lays it out so simple. I wish it was just as simple to put the list into action. It takes a lot of thinking for me to put my real goals on paper. But I will keep working on it, clarifying them…implementing them.
Hey Lynn, that is one of the most memorable and powerful things I have ever gotten from Brian Tracy: Clarity is Power. If you have that laser focus, if you know exactly what you’re going after and why, you’re basically already there! That’s the hardest part is just getting that absolute clarity. Once it’s so clear you can feel it, taste it, smell it, etc you’re just around the corner. Powerful lesson – every time I hear it!

Hi Lynn,
Thanks for writing this article. I’ve heard about this book before and I have not read it, so it was nice to get an overview. You listed the seven ways to conquer your goals.
1. Determine exactly what it is you want.
2. Pen it on Paper.
3. Set a deadline on your goal.
4. Make a list of everything you are going to have to do to achieve your goal.
5. Organize the list into a plan.
6. Take action on your plan immediately!
7. Promise to do something daily that moves you toward your major goal.
It is interesting to note that 97% of people do not have written goals. Fortunately, I just finished a program called The Ultimate Game of Life, 90 Day Challenge. The main purpose of the program is to learn how to establish specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound as your image shows.
We established 3 major goals, in 3 areas of happy, healthy, and wealthy. Then we broke down each area into 10-20 different habits and/or tasks which we could choose to do daily from each area. At the end of the 90 days, I reached all of my goals and got into the habit of establishing solid activities to maintain those goals. The program entered deeper waters by covering our 9 environments and setting goals in each environment so we know exactly which direction we are pursuing. I am curious about this book and I plan to check it out! Thanks.

Great post, Lynn! You are so right about the importance of writing goals down. I know that I’ve had a lot of goals in my head, but it wasn’t until I actually committed them to paper that they seemed to go somewhere. I think the reason for this is that there is just something about writing something down that makes it official, and we can definitely use this fact to our benefit.
