Our Pursuit of Happiness

Many have heard of the movie, “The Pursuit of Happyness.”  It’s a great story of how an out of luck fellow overcame huge obstacles to find success in his life.
In your pursuit of happiness how can you help ensure that this year will be full of happiness, love and more of the things you really enjoy?

Some people see the word happiness as a superficial word.  It’s okay if you want to substitute a more meaningful word in it’s place.  I am not really fond of the word happy.  Don’t get me wrong, I like to be happy, but there are other words that have more depth to me.

Recently I listened to a video by Christine Arylo, the Queen of Self Love.  Maybe you have never heard of her, but if you googled her name you can find out all about her.

In her pursuit of happiness, Christine urges everyone who wants to be happy and full of love to ask these 3 questions:

1. What did you really love about last year?

In looking back on my year, it was almost easier to determine what I didn’t love about it.  When I figured that out, it made me want to do more of what I do love and enjoy.

2. What was it that made you happy?

I am asking myself……What really filled me up? What floated my boat?  What jazzed me?  What left me with a satisfied feeling of accomplishment and enjoyment?  What was it that I did, that afterwards I said…”I should do that more often.”

3. What do you want to change?

For me, I want to be sure that I am doing number 1 and 2.  Life is too short to not enjoy it.  We don’t have any guarantee of tomorrow, so live each day to it’s fullest. Do those things that you love, that bring you pleasure, that bring a smile to your face.  Spend more time with those you love.  Stop doing the those things you don’t love.

Yes, we do have responsibilities that maybe we don’t particularly love to do, but we still have to do them.  That’s life.  This is where a good positive attitude comes in, no matter what we are doing.  Learn to make those duties fun.

And, there are things we love, but if we do them all the time, it may not be good for us.  For example, I love chocolate and other sweet things.  I enjoy those things. They bring me pleasure.  However, if I ate those kinds of yummies all the time, then I would not like my blooming body.  Do you get my drift?

We do have to remember to be wise.  Wisdom is to do now what we will be satisfied with later.  So we must strike a balance.

These are simple but hard questions. Digging deep and really taking a close look at what makes your heart bubble over will help you find that direction you want to go.

Some people love speaking.  Writing. Entertaining. Being social.  Exercising. Others enjoy solitude.  Quiet.  Working alone.  Helping others.  Reading. Traveling.

As we examine, it’s important to be specific asking ourselves what it is we truly desire for this year and the years to come.  Find that clarity by asking your heart and soul what they really want.  It’s inside of you.

Only you have the answers to these hard questions.  Answer these questions with clarity, so you can look back and say…………

“Wow, that was an awesome year!”

Thanks Lynn. They are great questions to give good direction. I will definitely be using them to plan the new year. We can all do with more love, joy and happiness in our life.

  2. Really enjoyed your article Lynn – a great reminder about the value of nurturing ourselves … taking the time to be with our thoughts, remind ourselves what’s important, and what we really want in life. Thanks!

  3. I love that movie, have probably watched it about 25 times! :-)

What I love most about last year is the progress I made in my business and how much I got to travel.

What I would like to change is to be better at asking for the sale.

I cried in that movie. It really makes you think how hard he worked to get what he wanted. Those really were huge and I really felt for him that his kid and him were in the bathroom.

For me, I did a lot with my business and personal life that I am happy with. I think this year is more focusing on taking myself to the next level, especially for myself and my health.

    Hello Lynn

Happiness is a state of mind, not a set of circumstances. Happiness is not about trying but about being. The three question that you share help us to keep our minds in sync with happiness. Another benefit of the questions is we have a deeper understanding of our self. Lynn, these words, “we do have responsibilities that maybe we don’t particularly love to do, but we still have to do them. That’s life. This is where a good positive attitude comes in, no matter what we are doing. Learn to make those duties fun.” really stood out as rock solid words that lead to happiness.

    Thanks

    Hello Lynn,

To me inner peace has a lot more depth than happiness. Happiness is usually is a reaction of something external.
Inner peace is something that is always with me no matter what.
There are things that made me extremely unhappy in the past like burying my loved one, yet I manage to find peace with it. I found a power within that I have never thought I possess.

Thank you for the insight, Lynn!

  7. Lynn,

Thanks for the good read. These questions really make you think. Sometimes, with questions like these, you are able to think analytically where you wouldn’t normally.

    Thanks again.
